The Predicate
The Kidnapping of India
Amit Varma of India Uncut Blog has written an excellent article in the Asian Wall Street Journal, which he has reproduced in the Indian Economy Blog. There has been much brouhaha over The Times report from the Mitrokhin archives that KGB spent a fortune bribing various levels of the establishment during the Indira Gandhi era. Titled "The Kidnapping of India", Amit's article makes good points about what happened economically and politically under Indira Gandhi and how in hindsight the fact that KGB had its way through the Indian government is actually the least surprising part of the history of those times. Amit points out that the real issue is that India still has the Soviet influence and people still think that Indira Gandhi's policies were laudable. The fact that Indira Gandhi took the Soviet way of doing things has harmed the country more than what KGB would have ever achieved.
I will write in detail about my views on this issue later.
